What will I learn? This three-week
“virtual boot camp” is designed to help high school teachers and advisers gain the skills they need to train tomorrow’s journalists and news consumers. This e-learning course will cover some of the basics in the previous ASNE High School Journalism Institute in an online group seminar, using interactive and innovative online techniques. This course is especially valuable for those who have little or no journalism training.

You’ll learn:
  • Law and ethics as they apply to student media
  • Skills for advising student publications/media management
  • Information-gathering, writing, editing and design approaches needed for today’s media

Not only will you get lots of group interaction through online chats and discussion forums, you'll get quality instruction from faculty including Candace Perkins Bowen, John Bowen, H.L. Hall and Susan Tantillo. They'll serve as your mentors and guides, offering lots of individual feedback, holding online office hours and moderating group discussions.

How long will it take? The content of this course unfolds over three weeks, with daily readings, assignments and discussion forums. You should plan to be available daily during the three-week session. Faculty members will guide you through new material, moderate online chats and provide individual feedback. In addition, the faculty will offer virtual "office hours" each day. The estimated time commitment is 15 hours a week.

Can I get credit for this course? The $179 course rate includes three CEUs through the College of Continuing Studies at Kent State University. When you apply for the course, please indicate that you are interested in the CEUs. Additionally, Boot Camp counts as the advising course for JEA’s Certified Journalism Educator Option A.

How do I sign up? To create the best learning experience for each participant, the total enrollment in an online group seminar is limited. The application deadline has passed for this session.

Additional course resources: This course includes readings from two books, "Law of the Student Press," available on CD-ROM from the Student Press Law Center, and "Inside Reporting: A Practical Guide to the Craft of Journalism," by Tim Harrower. The cost of these books is not included in the course tuition.

About the instructors: Candace Perkins Bowen is a former high school journalism teacher and student media adviser for more than 20 years in surburban Chicago and in Fairfax County, Va. She currently is the director of the Center for Scholastic Journalism at Kent State University. He previously was a journalism teacher and adviser in Ohio for more than 30 years. H.L. Hall is a former adviser and journalism teacher in Kirkwood, Mo., and is currently the executive director of the Tennessee High School Press Association. Susan Hathaway Tantillo was an adviser and journalism teacher at Wheeling (Ill.) High School and is the current secretary of the Journalism Education Association.

About online seminars: Much like a traditional class, an online group seminar has readings, assignments, due dates and discussion forums. Faculty members guide the group through new material, moderate online chats and discussions, and provide individual feedback. In this course, you can expect several assignments a week. Faculty also will host daily "office hours" online. To create an optimal interactive learning experience for each participant, the total enrollment in an online seminar is limited.
