About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

When you know what you want to write about, how do you scout for subjects? And, once you find them, how do you get them to open up to you?

In this webinar, we will talk about ways to court your characters, get them to trust you and, ultimately, take you home. We will also discuss methods of research, records-searching, and taking notes for feature stories.

What Will I Learn:
  • How to pitch stories to people you want to write about
  • How to convince them to open up
  • Other means of getting information
  • How to organize your notepad and take notes for a narrative
Who Should Take this Course:
  • Storytellers and feature writers
  • Writers who want to find their characters and what makes them interesting
  • Reporters interested in developing new sources
Course Instructor:

Lane DeGregory

Lane DeGregory is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Tampa Bay Times feature writer who prefers writing about people in the shadows. She went to work with a 100-year-old man who still swept out a seafood warehouse, hung out beneath a bridge with a colony of sex offenders and followed a feral child who was adopted.
