As mass shootings continue to plague the United States, journalists and news organizations must recognize and adopt best practices in order to document the story in proper context, hold the powerful accountable and minimize harm.

You'll hear from a variety of experts from different disciplines and see examples of both helpful and harmful reporting from recent cases.

This webinar will review the research that informs our understanding of the copy-cat phenomenon, and suggest coverage techniques.

Course Instructors:

Dr. Dan Reidenberg

Dr. Dan Reidenberg is Executive Director of SAVE, Managing Director of the National Council for Suicide Prevention, US Representative to the IASP and is Co-Chair of the International Media and Suicide Task Force. He serves on the editorial advisory boards for The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Crisis, International Journal of Emergency Services, American College of Forensic Examiners, Annals of Psychotherapy and Integrative Medicine and Esperanza magazine and is a reviewer for SAMHSA, National Lifeline, and the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Kelly McBride

Kelly McBride is the vice president at The Poynter Institute. She is a writer, teacher and one of the country's leading voices when it comes to media ethics. She has been on the faculty of The Poynter Institute since 2002 and is editor, along with Tom Rosenstiel of the American Press Institute, of The New Ethics of Journalism : Principles for the 21st Century.

Her other work involves Poynter’s Sense-Making Project, a Ford Foundation project examining the transformation of journalism from a profession of a few to a civic obligation of many, the effects of technology on democracy, and the media habits of the millennial generation. She conducts workshops in newsrooms and at journalism conventions across the country. Twice she has traveled to South Africa to lead advanced reporting and writing seminars geared toward reporters working in a young democracy. You can follow her on Twitter at @kellymcb.

Mark Follman

Mark Follman is the national affairs editor at Mother Jones, where he leads investigative projects and various politics and news coverage. Since 2012, his in-depth investigations into mass shootings, child gun deaths, and the economic impact of gun violence have been honored with numerous awards. His writing and commentary have also appeared widely elsewhere, from the New York Times and The Atlantic to National Public Radio and BBC World News.

Russell E. Palarea, Ph.D.

Dr. Russell Palarea is the Founder and President of Operational Psychology Services. He provides investigative consultation, operational training, and program development on threat assessment, insider threat, and counterterrorism to Fortune 500 corporations, law enforcement, universities, and Government agencies. Through his company, Dr. Palarea serves as the contract Operational Psychologist for the Diplomatic Security Service, where he spearheaded the creation the U.S.
