Food and the people writing about cronuts, kale and craft everything have invaded the digital space in ever-increasing numbers. There are more than 15,000 English-language food blogs vying for attention. Pinterest and Instagram, among other social sites, are awash in food photos, complete with step-by-step instructions. So, yes, we are a food-obsessed nation.
Writing about food and making money writing about food are not always compatible. That’s largely because writers don’t know where to shop their work and then don’t understand what the market wants.

Janet K. Keeler is the coordinator of the graduate Food Writing and Photography Certificate program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. She also teaches basic journalism classes at the university. Keeler has 35 years daily newspaper experience and was the longtime food and travel editor at the Tampa Bay Times, where her work was honored by the Association of Food Journalists, Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and the Society of Professional Journalists, among other organizations.
