About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

Food and the people writing about cronuts, kale and craft everything have invaded the digital space in ever-increasing numbers. There are more than 15,000 English-language food blogs vying for attention. Pinterest and Instagram, among other social sites, are awash in food photos, complete with step-by-step instructions. So, yes, we are a food-obsessed nation.

Writing about food and making money writing about food are not always compatible. That’s largely because writers don’t know where to shop their work and then don’t understand what the market wants.

In this webinar, you will learn that feeding the market and understanding what editors need will feed you, too. We will guide you through the maze of media possibilities to help connect you with editors and other freelance writers. We will discuss story ideas and pitches that will make you stand out. And get you hired.

What Will I Learn:
  • How to identify sellable food stories
  • How to understand what the market needs and the importance of research
  • How to connect with editors and online freelance writing groups
  • The best ways to pitch stories
  • Tips for producing clean, clear and engaging copy
Who Should Take this Course:

Bloggers, food writers, journalists, editors, chefs, culinary students, social media food marketers, food photographers or anyone seeking to make money by producing good food journalism.
