About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

If you're not comfortable working with numbers, your stories could be confusing and inaccurate. Whether it's working with large numbers or jargon-filled reports, it can be a challenge to learn how to question the numbers that really tell the story.

In this Webinar, we will review the basics that every journalist needs and give you some practical solutions for working out problems and presenting figures.

Course Instructor:

Neil Holdway

Neil Holdway is a news journalist who actually likes numbers. His career began as a copy editor in 1992 at the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago, and he has held several editing positions there since. He is now assistant managing editor/copy desk, serving as the lead editor at night and overseeing the front page as well as the web home page. Neil has been treasurer of the American Copy Editors Society and its Education Fund since 2005, and he does bookkeeping and tax work on the side.

It is an organization built on the advocacy of editing as a craft vital to clear writing and reader advocacy.
