About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

When big news breaks in your community, you want to have the highest impact presentation in print the next morning for your readers. There are often multiple angles and even more information to get to readers. What's the best way to package it all together on the front page and inside in order to get the most impact and have all the bases covered?

What's the role of a designer in journalism and how can visual journalists think about the big picture and help provide context to readers in coverage? The strongest ways for designers to be involved is to think about the story and the best way for readers to digest it.

In this webinar, learn how to create a plan flexible enough to cover the big story and adjust as more information pours in to ultimately tell the best story possible in the next day's paper.

Course Instructor:

Greg Mees

Greg Mees is an award-winning journalist at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. As the lead news designer, he designs and oversees the presentation of the Sunday front page, enterprise projects and breaking news. In 2016, he led the visual direction of the newspaper's ambitious coverage of the presidential election as well as coverage of Prince's death. He has previously designed and art directed the front page and the Sunday Science & Health section, as well as the Sunday local section.
