Social networks have caught the imagination of the online public like no other Internet phenomenon. More than 250 million people have signed up for major networks such as MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Another 3,000 special-interest social networks have sprung up. What's more, companies like Procter & Gamble, Disney and Starwood Hotels are making these communities a centerpiece of their marketing programs.
Why are social network so popular? What is the special sauce that has the average Facebook user logging on a half-dozen times a day? Not only do these sites help manage people's sprawling networks of casual contacts, they increasingly serve as guides to important information, in some cases taking over the role traditionally performed by journalists.
This Webinar, originally broadcast April 14, 2009, will examine the secrets of social networking and offer ideas for how to adopt them as a foundation for reader communities.
What Will I Learn:
- Why online "friends" are the foundation of social networks' appeal
- How trusted sources are migrating from mass media to friends' networks
- From examples of news organizations that are leveraging social networks to extend their influence
