About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

How do writers and editors continue to do their jobs well and grow in their craft? One answer is coaching, what has been called the human side of editing. Editing is not just about fixing broken copy. The best editors coach the writer, helping the writer fulfill the potential of the story and grow in the craft. Writers need to learn coaching too, so that they can help themselves and help other writers at a time of more pressing deadlines and diminished resources.

Over 10 focused and practical half-hour webinars, scheduled conveniently for 12:30 p.m. EDT, Roy Peter Clark, a writer, editor and longtime Poynter faculty member, will reveal, one by one, the spokes of the “wheel of coaching,” ways of thinking about your work that will change your view of it forever.

Session I, September 24: Introduction: Coaching the writing process, from concept through craft: Learn the difference between coaching a writer and fixing a story.

Session II, September 25: Search for ideas:Develop the capacity to see the world as a storehouse of ideas.

Session III, September 26: Why does this matter?: Learn how to recognize the difference between what is interesting and what is important.

Session IV, September 27: Gather evidence: Build a workbench of reporting tools to explore and determine which paths to follow for the most valuable information.

Session V, September 28: Find focus: Discover what the work is really about and how to communicate that to your audience.

Session VI, October 1: Create a blueprint: Don't forget to plan, constructing a beginning, middle, and end.

Session VII, October 2: Consult team members: Collaborate early enough in the process so that everyone can do their best work.

Session VIII, October 3: Build a draft: Learn how to overcome obstacles and procrastination through rehearsal and early drafting.

Session IX, October 4: Revise and refine: Remember to improve all steps of the process (not just your draft).

Session X, October 5: Publish and seek feedback: Think of each story as a writing workshop -- a learning experience.

Roy Peter Clark is vice president and senior scholar at The Poynter Institute, where he has taught writing since 1979.
