This course is designed as a historical and practical lab and exercise in documentary and photojournalism through digital imaging and storytelling. In addition to the use of digital camera equipment and imaging and multimedia software on the computer, students will be exposed to a variety of methods for visualizing, gathering, and producing their news, feature and storytelling images for print media, soundslide shows and the web. Correct and appropriate caption writing will be stressed. While appropriate technical skills will be addressed, emphasis will be on the development of the photographer’s own vision within the context of striving to be a fair and compassionate reporter. Class sessions will consist of lectures and practical discussions relevant to photojournalism and documentary photography. There will be field assignments during and outside of class periods. This will be coupled by lab time on the computer including demonstrations of image editing software and correct captioning techniques done in a digital darkroom. There will be regular reviews of student work, whether in progress or complete. Class lectures, demonstrations and discussions will be supplemented by text reading assignments, a scheduled field trip, and guest lecturers . Two soundslide presentations of assigned photojournalistic work will be produced by each student during the course. Students will be posting some of their work on their own student-produced web blogs.
