Journalism Special Topics Course: Covering Poverty in America (syllabus)

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of LBJ's "War on Poverty" declaration in his 1964 State of the Union address, we are offering an advanced journalism course for undergraduate journalism students that delves into the issues of poverty/homelessness in this country and some of the ways organizations (particularly non-profits) address it. A film/communications course is being offered with the class and the two classes will meet together on a weekly basis to watch films and hear speakers. We have in-the-field reporting assignments on the journalism side and film crews from the other course who will shoot and edit material. We also have student photographers enrolled in the journalism course who will shoot the bulk of the pictures. It is our plan to take the best work and upload it to a webpage at the end of the semester.
