This course blends the theory and practice of social media within the context of journalism and social trends in mobile information consumption and participatory culture. The course covers emerging theory on social media, including: the networked society and networked gatekeeping, spreadability, social network analysis, citizen journalism, design thinking and visual storytelling, best practices for content curation and covering breaking news events with social tools, as well as verification of social content. Students apply theory to develop and implement a professional social media strategy, maintain a blog and/or an online portfolio. For final projects, students conduct a social media audit and develop a social media plan for a Chicago nonprofit.
