Butch Ward is senior faculty and former managing director at The Poynter Institute, where he teaches leadership, editing, reporting and writing. During his 27-year career as a journalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Baltimore News-American, Butch held a variety of newsroom positions, including managing editor at both newspapers.
Before joining Poynter, he spent three years being covered by journalists as spokesperson for Independence Blue Cross, the largest health insurer in Southeastern Pennsylvania. He leads seminars in leadership, editing and writing, and has taught for the Committee of Concerned Journalists and for APME NewsTrain. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Butch helped journalists explore more effective ways to cover national elections for their local audiences. You can follow him on Twitter at @butchward.
Butch and his wife, Donna, who helps run a library for 250 kindergarten students, live in Wallingford, Pa. They have two children: Coley, who lives with his wife, Suz, and daughter Cassidy, in Newton, MA. Caitlin is a registered nurse.
