About Certificate Programs

Certificates of proficiency are designed to measure your knowledge of essential skills or information. To receive a certificate, take the NewsU courses associated with that certificate program and then successfully complete the online assessment for each course. Once you've passed all the assessments, you will receive your certificate from Poynter's NewsU.

This certificate program provides an overview of Florida’s open meetings and public records laws, as well as the ethics requirements incumbent upon upon public officials and employees. It has been approved by the Florida Bar for 14.5 CLE hours, including 5 ethics hours.

This interactive online program, developed by the First Amendment Foundation and The Poynter Institute, combines the best of the Foundation's training with the flexibility of online learning. Once you enroll, you have unlimited access to the courses and assessments required to earn your CLEs.

The only way to earn the certificate is to enroll in the Sunshine Certificate program. Those who enroll in each course individually will not have access to the certificate of proficiency. CLE hours apply only to the certificate program.

First Amendment Foundation

The First Amendment Foundation believes that government openness and transparency is critical to citizen trust and involvement in a democratic society — without Government in the Sunshine, civic engagement cannot bloom. Through ongoing monitoring of the state’s public records and open meetings laws, and the education of government officials and the citizens they serve about those laws, the Foundation promotes the public’s constitutional right to oversee and to participate in the governance process.
